You are not only an idiot, you are a menace to the on-line community as a whole.
Do you ever wonder why you get so much spam and junk mail in your inbox? It is mainly because irresponsible people do not properly maintain their computers!
These irresponsible people allow their machines to become infected and refuse to ever clean or dis-infect them. Once infected, these machines become "owned" by their attacker (hacker) and are basically hijacked to do anything the hacker wants. Very often this includes being used as an e mail server to spew out thousands of spam e mails per day, filling the inboxes of reponsible computer users with loads of crap.
So, please, keep on being an 'idiot" as you have so aptly have named yourself, one day you will get your just rewards. Your computer will be "hacked", you important information will be stolen, your very identity will no longer be yours as the hacker will have sold your social security number to a criminal looking to have a new identity. Of course your name and address will also be sold along with it .
Your credit card will show a huge balance at the end of the month as that number will have been sold also.
You will wonder why your computer is running "so damn slow" and wonder why strange icons appear on your desktop and strange, phony, "Your computer is infected alerts " keep popping up from your task bar all the time.
You will find it hard to get any kind of work done on the computer, the constant porno pop-ups every 30 seconds will be just too distracting.
You will needlessly waste money buying a new computer because you feel the old one has become so slow and irritating.
No. I do not think you an idiot, you just sound like a very immature kid with little idea of the hassles your cavilier attitude towards computer security, can bring and a wanton disrespect for others.
Here's hopeing you mature soon :-)

Honestly my man it depends on what you have on your computer, what you do online, but most of all how much you know about the subject.
Ive had a dsl connection for over 5 years, im constantly connected. And I have no anti virus or firewall other than windows firewall. But I know what im doing and if something happens I can fix it. havent had a virus in all that time either.
I do run antispyware scans frequently and once in awhile if I suspect something is up I will do an online virus scan.
it certainly isnt a bad thing to have an antivirus, but update its definitions regularly or there is really little point to having it.

I don't mean to be rude or insulting, but Yes you are if you are using Windows. If you are using Linuz or Mac OS, then you dont need a virus scanner, so no.
Get either AntiVir (www.free-av.com) or avast! (www.avast.com) for your antivirus needs. You only need one of these, otherwise all hell could break loose.
Also download WIndows Defender from Microsoft and Spybot, search and destroy. These two will destroy spyware. You should get both of these.
I hope this has been of help!

If you don't need one, you're not an idiot. For example if you're using a stand-alone PC (not connected to the internet or the local network) and rarely use CDs/Floppies (and other such storage media) from other people, then you don't have to have an anti-virus. However it is advisable to use one as it keeps you safe.

No virus scanner? GREAT!
Now just disable your firewall and share the root of your hard disk with anyone on your network!
Secure that thing ASAP, or you'll soon discover the answer to your question is an emphatic "YES".

no, you're not an idiot. but it's always easier to prevent things from happening than try to get rid of them.
the best computer security is to have antivirus+antispyware installed, so you would be protected from all types of computer threats.
here are reviews of most popular antispyware
http://www.2-spyware.com/anti-spyware
take a look at McAfee forum here: http://forums.mcafeehelp.com/index.php
i wanted to use mcAfee too, but once i read how incompatible it is with other scanners and how difficult it is to configure it and make it work i change my mind.

yes, because there are free ones on the web. AVG anti virus is free on the web, get it. Spybot, Microsoft's Windows Defender, and Lovasoft's Ad-Aware SE personal are also good additions to add to your collection. You never know what sorts of goodies lie on your computer.

Not a good idea,
Do install some virus scanner, you can get a lot of stuff thru internet even when you are not using any external media directly on your machine.
