How do you do a manual on tony hawks project 8?

I am having problems doing a manual in the game. Ihave went to training but i still cant figure it out can someone help me. It says to push square but when i do nothing happens.

You can also do it the old school way and hit Up and then Down real quick to manual. This works both while riding and while in the air just before you land.

Since I'm a player from way back when, manualing by just hitting Square throws off my game; including accidentally doing a flip trick just before landing and ending in a bail.

you have to push the controller in the direction you want to do the manual. Push square and controller direction at the same time. It takes some practice but once you get it...like riding a bike.
