I'm forty and just gave birth back in Dec. I was very insulted while in the hospital by two of the doctors on call in my OB/Gyn office. They both tried to convince me to have my tubes tied and kept talking about how old I was. I thought they were out of place being that they were not my personal doc and knew nothing of my heath, personal life, etc.... I left the hospital extremely hurt.
I remember my mom telling me that the reason she had her tubes tied is because her doctor was mad at her for getting pregnant again so she felt she had too. I know that is nuts but that is how she felt back in the 60's. She is passed now.
I was wondering if many other women are receiving this type of pressure from their physicians?

BTW, it was the day after my delivery when I was in my room recovering that the docs brought this up to me. Not during delivery.

There is no reason for those docs to be pressuring you to have your tube tied! In todays day and age, to have your tubes tied is a personal choice! Age only is not an indication to have your tubes tied! I have seen women at 50 having children. None of the OB/GYNS I work with pressure their older patients to have their tubes tied. You should do what you feel is right for you. If you want to have more children, then that is your choice, not theirs! Good Luck and Congrats on your new baby!

I think it's pretty common. Sad but true. I had my 4th when I was almost 37 and the pressure for all the testing during the pregnancy was unreal. No thanks, I don't care the outcome I'm having my baby was often not good enough. I passed on all those age related tests and everything was fine. But the nurses and a few of the doctors would ask repeatedly every visit. Enough already, they treat us like we're 90 and senile sometimes. When I had my 3rd child at 35 and had decided to go with an all natural childbirth (no drugs, etc)the doctor pushed me constantly. I didn't use her and changed doctors eventually because she couldn't respect my decision to let me try. I think doctors push us to do what is easiest and best for them, not us. They are afraid of being sued for an age related problem so they try to avoid the problems all together. I understand that too what with malpractice insurance being so expensive but still it isn't their decision and they should stay out of it unless asked.

Getting your tubes tied is a VERY personal decision. YOU have to make it for YOU. The reasons to get your tubes tied are also personal. Having CHILDREN is personal. You need to look at the risks of Middle aged pregnancies on both you and whatever children may come. THEN you, and only YOU need to decide what to do from there. I think that the Dr.s were TOTALLY out of line at the hospital, although I think that the REASON they brought it up there, is because having your tubes tied right after childbirth is easier for the Dr. I think that WHATEVER age you choose to stop having children is up to YOU.

Don't do it unless it's life threatening. Even then, it's your decision to make. I just read in a local newspaper a couple of days ago that a 67 year old woman had just gave birth to healthy twins through secarian. This was in Spain and she had undergone vitro fertilization, but the sentiment goes for all women. Only we have the ability to procreate. Hey, you think the OB/GYNs (if male) are jealous of that fact?
You have the Power.

Oh man - honestly, some doctors can be social idiots! I know that sucks, being talked to like that, and once the words are out and said you can't make them go away - but, I'd try not to worry about it. I'd say it's just a case of people with a lot of education and not much empathy thinking they know what's best for everyone they meet. Ugh - I am sorry! Nobody gets to tell you to tie your tubes!
Congrats on your baby, btw - that's great!

I'm sorry, but its reality. Once a woman reaches a certain age the chance of having a helathy baby diminishes. The doctors are looking out for your future children... not necessarily you entirely. Face the reality and try to be less selfish. YEah, you may feel insulted because they make you feel old... face reality... YOU ARE MIDDLE AGED!!!!! This is nothing to be ashamed of... but bringing a disfigured baby (mentally, physically) into this world knowing the risks is.
Don't be mad because I'm telling the truth. Could you live with yourself if you had a child with down syndrome because you decided to have a baby at 45? Yes, you definitely still love your child, but it wouldn't be fair to your child... Doesn't every child have the right to a mother and a father, a good loving home, and basically the right to the best life possible? Having any kind of disfigurement is not at the top of that list.
All I'm saying is think about the children... not yourself. That's all I'm saying.

good god. That is none of their business. Don't get your tubes tied unless you want to. My auntie had babies until she was 45!
Some people are so nosy... tell them off and find a new office

I cannot believe this! I say that if your own doc says you are in good enough health, then who cares what the others say. Besides, it's your own body and your own decision.
