I bought a 2005 Chevy Aveo a few months ago because it was supposed to get excellent gas mileage (27 city/35 highway). Well I've been keeping track for the past two months and I'm only getting 21-24 miles per gallon. What the heck?

I drive it smoothly and put quality brand gas and I drive about half highway and half city, so I should be averaging more than 30 mpg.

It's still under warranty so I took it to the dealership and they can't find anything wrong with it. There was a recall for my car that had something to do with the fuel system but their records show that the previous owner already had the work done. It still has a bumper-to-bumper warranty so if you have any suggestions I can have the dealership try it.

The only reason why I bought the car was because of its gas mileage. I'd rather be driving a pickup with this kind of gas mileage! I feel like going back to the dealership and shoving my Aveo up their butt!

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Barring any mechanical problems with your car (which it looks like you've checked into), it's possible that the EPA ratings for your car are incorrect based upon where you live/commute. The EPA is creating new tests to determine fuel economy for cars starting in the 2008 model year that more closely represent the real mpg ratings because The EPA tests fail to take into account clogged commuter roads as well as high speed interstate driving. Driving faster than 65 reduces highway fuel economy and obviously if when you drive in your city you spend most of your time stuck in traffic that will dramatically reduce your gas mileage.

Currently the EPA tests mileage for city driving as well as highway driving. City driving speeds are limited to 52 mph and highway speeds do not exceed 60 mph. The tests are conducted at room temperature with the vehicle's air-conditioning turned off.

The new EPA mileage tests will be phased in two stages. The first stage will lower mileage estimates to reflect the drain of air-conditioning and other high technology and equipment now part of modern vehicles.

Phase one could cut mileage estimates by as much as 13 percent.

Phase two begins with the 2011 model year. The specifics of those tests that the EPA is contemplating are unclear but the mileage estimates are likely to include emissions as well as mileage.

If it is a new car (or one without many miles) it needs to be driven in. When a car is new the engines get much worse fuel economy, as you drive them it will increase. The EPA estimates are also said to be way off, as hey are windows up, AC off, not stop-and-go, and at slower speeds than people usually drive. In magizines and other reviews they always rate the fuel economy low simply because the short time they have it its engine is not running up to full potential.

This could be due to many factors, However have you ever had the fuel filter replaced? And while you are there, have them check the air filter also. If this does not help, it may be other things (Driving Habits, wrong size tires etc etc etc).
