expalin why you would expect BeF2 molecule to be linear but an SF2 molecule to be angular????

Some atoms do not have enough electrons to satisfy the octet rule. Two examples are beryllium and boron. Since it only has two valence electrons, beryllium only needs four electrons to be "happy" in a bonding situation(boron needs six) and so it has no lone pairs and two bonds. Therefore it is sp hybridized and takes a linear molecular geometry. Sulfur, however, has two bonds to flouride and two lone pairs on it making it sp3 hybridized and consequentely leading to the observed angular shape (with bond angles <109.5 degrees).
