Okay, when I first clicked on this one, I was thinking that you were taking something too far, and was gonna say something about how they are just trying to do their very best and prove to everyone how good of a parent they are.
But then I read the details, and jeez! The cashier was just glancing at the baby, probably, and that mom was rude as heck! I could understand if the cashier reached over and touched the baby, because her hands are probably filthy after handling money all day (one of the dirtiest, most bacteria-laden things out there), but that's taking it too far.
But also, please try not to generalize all of us new parents. My little boy is almost 11 months old, and he's my first and I was worried about all sorts of things right at first that I just don't give a darn about now, like boiling his pacifier everytime it falls on the floor (the floor in the house, not like..the floor at Wal-Mart. I still boil it then), but I was never 'uptight' about it.
And some new parents that I know could stand to be a little more uptight. There's a girl I know who would pack bottles of mixed formula in a diaper bag for hours without an ice pack (and formula goes bad after an hour without refridgeration, according to the label), and who left her infant's antibiotics sitting on the changing table, without bothering to read the instructions which stated that it needed to be kept cold. She would leave dirty diapers lying in the crib, and fed her marshmallows at 6 months old.
She was one extreme, and your lady in the store was the other, I guess.

I can see both sides on this one. It's the middle of cold and flu season, for crying out loud! "just looking" can still spread germs. MOST baby lookers get pretty darned close to a baby's face when they "just look". Close enough to breathe some pretty crummy crud into teeny little lungs. Maybe this mom had just had someone cough on the poor thing right before getting into line, and it reminded her of the germiness of being in public. You never know. I say cut her some slack. It's true, a lot of new parents are pretty uptight, but it's their right. Personally, I'm a mom of three kids, and I don't think I was ever really uptight. It's got a lot to do with personality as well as hormones. They get a little unruly for some mommies!

well, as a mother of four kids, I can see where you're coming from. Alot of new parents ARE uptight, BUT...my son Jake came down with viral meningitis when he was only twelve days old. He almost died, and he suffered some brain damage. If I had the guts to tell people to stay away from my newborn baby, He may not have suffered such a fate. I was no rookie parent. He was my third child. I feel like I should have known better.

Hm. That lady might be a little TOO over protective. (Unless she ment about getting too close...)
But after having a baby hormones are way out of control. Some women aren't really affected, but some get very... wacky I guess. They can be overly protective, paranoid, etc.
Or maybe the woman was just in a bad mood and the cashier was someone to vent to?

Looking at a baby won't get the baby sick... touching and holding it could. lol sorry, but people can be rude. Not sure if there was anything wrong with this newborn or not... but I don't see how looking at a baby could get the baby sick. lol People look at my son alllllll the time. We were at a store a few days ago, and the cashier asked us if this was our only child, and we said yes. My husband said and the one and only child. She said, "No no no, you must have more babies, go and make more beautiful babies." lol Babies are too precious not to look at them. Looking a babies makes me happy and smile. I find nothing wrong with looking.

I think you need to cut people some slack. New parents aren't the experts that you are with 2 kids and lots of experience. Maybe you had the perfect pregnancy and perfect birth, but most parents don't.
Most moms come home with their babies full of worries, hormones, and questions.
Just smile and giggle at the silliness of the question. But cut the girl some slack. No one is perfect...especially not new parents.

A lot of new parents are just afraid of doing something wrong and messing up and/or breaking their children. Once they have the hang of it and realize that the little buggers are quite resilient, they chill out.

Sometimes new moms are overprotective. They dont know things that experienced moms do. They are new at it and are super careful. They'll loosen up once they have been a mom for a while.
