My 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix just started acting up. It started with the RPM gauge going to 0 while driving, then the "off Trac" light comes on. Now it sometimes won't start, it will crank, but not turn over. When I take it to the dealer they say nothing is wrong with it. And last night it wouldn't start right away, then it did, but as I got almost home, it just shut off on me while driving. Has anyone ever exerienced this before. The mechanics have no clue b/c there are no codes coming up and it doesn't do it all the time.

It seems to be a sensor getting hot, then when it cools down everything is fine. See if it has a cam sensor or crank sensor, this could be the problem.

Hi, I have a 2001 Grand Prix with the EXACT same problem. The tach and trac off light go off at the same time while driving. The car will cut off while driving, and will have trouble starting up for a few minutes, or won't start after sitting in the driveway off for a while. But most of the time it functions fine. I have not been able to solve it yet but have plugged a code reader onto the car while this happened and read back a code which is: P0336 -Crankshaft Position Sensor Circuit A Range/Performance. It would not set off the SES light but would be in as an active code. I would clear the code while the car was running and the tach was off, and the code would come right back on. I brought it to the dealership and they said my cat converter was all plugged up and replaced that and the o2 sensors, but the problem still showed up after. I have noticed while the tach is off and the car is driving, that when the engine is wide open throttle and you get higher into the rpms (about 4-6k) that there is some kind of high rattle in the engine which is totally related to how fast the engine is turning over. I don't know what this means or what could be causing this. Also, I don't know if bringing it back to the shop would help but am looking for more help and information. I am still trying to find an answer for this problem. Let me know if this helps and if you find a solution. Thanks!

If you put a new battery in the car and you made sure it was the correct cranking amps for the car then it should start fine. Your problem may be a result from a few things: 1. If your car has over 100,000 miles you need to replace your spark plugs with the factory Iridium plugs (not cheap). Also look over and inspect your spark plug wires. 2. Run a can of Fuel injector cleaner in the car or take it to a shop and have them perform a fuel system cleaning. 3. See if your coil packs are producing the correct spark voltage that is required. This will need to be done in a shop with a machine capable of doing it. 4. Check your battery cables, specifically your body ground cable next to your battery. 5. Change your oil in the car regularly. Dirty-thick sluggish oil can hinder a car's starting ability.

i mechanic for a living,,and i have seen this before,it seems like your ignition switch may be going out on it,,i had a Bonneville do this a while back ,and it had been to many shops before i got it,,i drove it around and got it to die,,and it was the ignition switch going out on it,,you could cut it off,and restart it ,and sometimes it would start right up,and other times it would turn over real good and never fire up,,the you turn the key to off,and try it again, and it would start..the switch you,ll be looking for is the one down on the bottom of the steering column its not real hard to replace ,,but that would be where id look for the problem your having,,these seem to go out a lot on GM products,,,i have already put one on my Chevy truck, and it has real low miles on it,, but i think that's the problem,,good luck i hope this help,s.

sounds like you have a electrical short in the ignition switch..or either you have something in the power supply box that is loose..with the loose of power and not starting..but the rpm going to zero and the trac light coming on could be the input speed sensor malfunction...I have to ask this...has this car been wrecked, and if so, where...email me back please...with information
