Certainly Gandhi was the extreme pressure to bring that about. Without the media coverage he would not have been noticed. Most of the credit goes to the media for exposing the trials and tribulations that he went through, Gandhi was a remarkable man very well educated and new how to manipulate government and the press. He gathered the mass sympathy of his people and in turn they followed him in the common denominator of freedom to rule themselves independently. Neru, and many others assisted in the political activities with the British. Britain did promise they would withdraw but it did depend on the result of the war, so that was questionable at best especially since they were looking to defeat Hitler. By the by his peaceful challenges was a winning approach and did not go un-noticed by the Reverend Martin Luther King, of which he adopted much of his philosophy and tactics as well for the Civil Rights Movement in America. Both are martyrs, both were assassinated.
