I'd go with a Toshiba Satellite but you're not going to get much else with it if you want 1gb RAM and 100gb HD. Toshibas stand up pretty well to wear-and-tear
Consider buying a used Dell, Toshiba, or HP off of eBay from somebody reputable or a refurbished one (the Dell Outlet Center for Dells). The drawback is that Dells and HPs aren't made entirely of high-quality parts and the stuff does break down.
I have a Dell Inspiron laptop and while it worked beautifully for a 1.5 years. It now does it's best to give me a few minutes of Hell everyday (I've had data corrupted, RAM seems to off, had to wipe the HD, I think there's something wrong with the motherboard and probably something else).

IBM is the best in my opinion, not sure you'll find a new one with those specs for $800, but you might consider a used one from ebay

I have tried Dell, Compaq and Gateway in the past.....Currently I am using a Hewlett Packard and it is by far the best of all the ones I have used.
Try HP......I think you will be satisfied.
