It sounds like you have the same thing as I do...practically the exact same symptoms, at about the same time...This effects approx. 75% of all women so its prefectly normal

You could have someting called patellofemoral pain symptom.
I have found that the best thing to do for it is to take some apin meds and Ice. There is nothing they can do beyond that. There is no surgery, but you do need to go to an orthopedic doctor to check it out , and to check the progression of your case, because you could have some more severe issues later on.

Good luck !

Injury to a ligament is called a SPRAIN.
Injury to a muscle is called a STRAIN.

In either case, the very first thing you should do is:

R.I.C.E.

REST-Stop all activities which cause pain to the sprained area.

ICE-Apply icing to the area several times a day, but never for more than 10-15 minutes at a time. Protect the skin.

COMPRESSION-Wrap the sprained area to reduce swelling.

ELEVATION: Keep the sprained area as close to the level of the heart as is conveniently possible.

The Ice and Compression (Cold compression therapy} will stop the pain and swelling while the injury starts to heal itself. Controlling the swelling and inflammation is critical to the healing process and the icing further restricts fluid leaking into the injured area as well as controlling pain.

Elevation is best achieved by raising the knee to about waist level to keep gravity from allowing the fluid (serum) to pool in the knee. Ice and compression also help prevent this.

The extreme pain and stiffness is worse the first 2 days, then it should gradually subside. Stopping the swelling (inflammation) is key to a quicker recovery.

If R.I.C.E is followed and there is not gradual improvement by the third day, or pain increases, or you cannot put any weight on it, see an orthopedic MD to rule out fracture or complete separation of the tendon or muscle.

Good Luck

Don't worry! I had the same symptoms and also couldn't remember any specific cause. I went to the doctor, and he gave me a shot of cortisone in my kneecap. Although the shot did hurt for a few seconds, soon afterwards my knee felt great -- what a relief!

That was about 6 months ago, and I haven't had a problem since. So, go to the doctor -- I'm sure it's
just like what I had. Don't let another day of pain pass! You're only one shot away from a pain-free day!

You probably just twisted it somehow and have an inflamed muscle or tendon. Give it a week before you see an MD. I highly doubt you need any surgery since you didn't have a serious accident which could have done damage. Ice it and look it up on WebMD. Good luck.

You could have pulled a muscle or have a inflamed infection. Or the start of weak joints there. You need to see the doctor or it will only get worse. Even if it goes away it will keep coming back if left untreated.
