He has retired... again. The whole firing skit was all pretend to help him leave to write a book, or whatever, like he usually does. He'll come back probably after he has finished doing whatever he has gone to do. He'll come back, don't you worry.(Probably around Wrestlemania 23).

The fire thing was a joke and i heard a rumor that he will come back and he will challenge vince mcmahon at wrestlemanaia to get his revenge on him. I read it on pwmania.com a month ago

the whole melina thing was a storyline actually written up by himself, he is under a legends contract, so he doesn't have to work as much, but is also using this time off to build the story and finish a new book

As much as I used to like him, hes not coming back. I understand he was fired.
And, as he's a prolific writer (and a darn good one too), has saved his money and invested wisely, makes personal appearances, etc., he's not hurting for money.
