i don't think it's good for it, might be samonella on it, and check if it's shell is soft or hard, if it's soft it's not healthy if it's hard, it's healthy.

I assume this is a water turtle- Red-ear slider or Painted, for example.

A thin coat of algea is not really a bad thing- it usually means that the tank is nice and warm and well-lit. If the algea is getting thick or hairy it should be controlled.

You can control algea usually by simply scrubbing it off with a washcloth or soft brush (toothbrush). After it is gone, rub the shell well with a paste of salt and water and rinse to eliminate the 'roots' that will regrow rapidly.

Make sure the tank is not TOO well lit or TOO warm. You can use Chinese algea eater fish, snails, etc. to help control the growth as well.

If it's green alegea then it wont hurt it. If it's white and stringy then you need to give a good bath. Make sure you check to make sure the turtles shell is hard and not soft both top and bottom of the carapace. Aqautic turtles are famouse for getting shell rot. The number one cause for it is not getting enough UVB light and not keeping the water clean enough. If it's green alegea you can just scrub it off. White stringy substance let your turtle have clean baths twice a day in your tub and increase his UVB light to 12 hours per day and clean his tank once a week.

Does your turtle have a basking spot with a heat light over it? You can use a soft toothbrush to scrub the algae off.

check the shell if it soft thats a bad sign. if its hard hes healthy. you should still get the algea off. you can do this by taking a toothbrush (never been used) & just scrubbing it off. just dont scrub to hard & dont use anything but water, no soap or anything like that! it will kill it! good luck!
