But it still runs bad I replaced the fuel filter, air filter, spark plug wires, distributor cap and rotor and it still runs bad like it needs a tune up. what do i need to do to fix my engine? it idles bad too.,

i mechanic for a living and own a shop,and they may not have re-set the timing on it,,its pretty important to do this,it should run a lot better with all you had done to it,,its possible they missed a step when they tuned it up,, because these cars usually run pretty well,,if you paid to have it done id return it to them,and have them check it again,,any time you pay to have something done,and its not right ,,always take it back ,,they will probably go over it and check it to see if everything is alright with it,and maybe they,ll find whats causing ot to be sluggish id just tell them it didn't seem to be right,and maybe they,ll at least try and figure it out,,i wouldn't pay someone again to work on it,,I'm sure its probably something simple,,good luck hope this help,s.

Sounds like your timing might be off. If your valve timing is off than this will make the car idle like crap and it will also use allot of gas. Or your car could have a bad sensor on your car it is hard to check because of how old it is. the computer will take a life time to figure out that some thing is wrong with the engine. I also noticed that you did not have the O2 sensor replaced and you didn't replace the PCV valve. Theses two things aside from the spark plugs and filters will have a very noticeable impact on performance and fuel economy. And also DO NOT listen to Got Speed the if you clean your Mass air flow sensor than you will cost your self ALLOT of money these sensors can run from like 15 to over 100 dollars. The sensors on four cylinder cars are usually more than six cylinder cars.

from past repairs, my best guess is the Air Flow Meter..and you can try and clean it..located just off the air filter box, loosen the bands at each end and unplug connector, take off car...when you look into it, you won't be impressed, it doesn't look like much, except a screen and two very thin wires from sensor attach to body...spray with carburator cleaner, then let air dry, or spray starting fluid to remove anything left from fluid.. reinstall and see if this helps...sometimes this works, and make sure you have nothing loose between the air box and the throttle body..

On a car this age, I would bet on a timing belt that has slipped time. You will need to have the timing checked. If it cannot be adjusted, then the timing belt has slipped and will need to be replaced. You could also have some leaky valves causing you trouble. Have the compression checked.

Timing, Have you had the belt changed? I would start ther if you havn't, and if you have had it changed it could the the timign is out. But if you havn't changed the timing belt before and the car has over 100 000km (60 000mi) i would change the belt and go from there. Take it to a shop and have them diagnose it.
