Cul de sac - (literally means bottom of the bag, as is the curved shape of a dead-end road in a housing estate)

pied à terre - foot on the ground (a place one returns to to feel at home)

un chien assis - meaning 'sitting dog' describes those gabled windows in the attic space of a roof which stick up like triangles (hope this makes sense)

stylo plume (fountain pen)

noeud papillon (butterfly knot) meaning bow tie
