Sorry Dr. Spock, but you are wrong...not everything revolves around astronomy definitions.
Haloes and coronae are atmospheric (meteorological) conditions caused by refraction and diffraction, respectively. I have seen plenty of lunar coronae in my life, usually one whenever there is a full moon and lots of condensation in the atmosphere. It is also possible for a corona to form around the sun without an eclipse being involved.
The corona you are thinking of is astronomical and does happen during an eclipse, but that is not what is going on is it?
The halo outside is indeed caused by refraction and reflection of ice crystals in the atmosphere. It is indeed beautiful.
I hope I have cleared up any confusion, don't rely on your Star Trek definitions to get you through every day life.

No, it's NOT called a corona (THAT appears around the Sun in eclipses).
It's a HALO around the Moon, caused by the scattering of the Moon's reflected light by ICE PARTICLES very high in Earth's own atmosphere. It's most obvious on particularly cold nights. It CAN be quite spectacular, and particularly impressive if you've never seen it before.
I just went outside and looked, and YES, it IS SPECTACULAR tonight, an apparently large "empty circular hole" surrounding the Moon with a 10 - 15 degree size, then a whiter dense ring tapering off further away from the Moon, looking almost like the outer shell of a planetary nebula.
It's one of the finest examples I've ever seen. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.
Live long and prosper.

It is nothinjg it is just the product of refraction of the light to the water particles at the atmosphere because during precipetation there is also processes that involve the light that is why they are colors that can be formed in to it...GET IT GETCH Mo Do you get that...

The moon blocks out the sun giving us night. The ring behind it would be light from the other side.

if it's a lunar eclipse, then it's called a corona.
