Where you stand depends on where you sit. So much depends on your individual situation.
You could say that all of us are here to help one another. he more we halp each other, the better the world is for all of us. this is an enlightened self interest approach.
Unfortunately, life is not always so simple. We are faced with a lot of gray areas and paradoxes. Bad things happen. People are oftened faced with two evil or bad choices, i.e.do you go home to face abuse or runaway and live on the streets usually in a life of crime. Or sometimes a choice is between good and good. Do you save the mothers life or the babies when pulling someone out of a burning car and you can only take one? Do you donate to save the air, or stop child abuse?
Or your choice might not be clear at all. Do you give money to the homeless man because he needs food, or you refuse because he might by drugs? These are ethical dilemas that we are often faced with. They are difficult choices and each is a specific problem that we learn from and hopefully become better people through.
You could say that the others are there specifically for you to help, so that you become a better person - growing and learning while you help them. Here is another example.
There is a movie with Meryl Streep called Marvin's Room. Marvin is her father and pretty much a vegetable. Her sister takes care of him, and finds ways to still get him to smile, even though he doesn't communicate or even recognize her. She has grown so much, and become such a good caring person from taking care of him when others would have pulled the tube, that you can see the power of goodness that can grow out of helping someone less fortunate. Many people might say that the quality of Marvin's life is nonexistant, and that his life is a waste, however the goodness of his life comes from what others become by taking care of him.

well in all reality each is here for their own purpose. so define "we" because yes some are here to help others while others are here to be helped and cause the problems. but when we need help are we then considered an "other" and an "other" is considered part of the "we"? we should all be here to help one another out but sadly thats now how the world is. some are more interested in helping only themselves and causing problems for others.

Then the others are here to help us too.
Do you honestly think that we only give but not take.?
It's not true.
Whenever we give, we also take, take what?
perhaps gratitude and love, from the other person whom we have helped.
every event in life is a 2-way traffic.
we cannot speak to the wall and have our voices sucked into the wall material.
All of us are here, each for a specific purpose.
Each of us bring a plate of dish that we prepare, and when we put it all onto the big round table of life, we have a grand banquet.

Nice avatar btw... I believe we are all here to learn and teach. What we learn about is ourselfs and others. What we teach is about ourselfs and others. I dont think we can ever know everything about ourselfs but if it was possible wow what a thing that would be. Possibly thats the biggest block on my mind right now im working on finding a way to knock it down. Anyhow just explore self and others and teach about self and others ect.

The exact same question Charlie Brown asked Lucy years ago. But I don't recall the answer from that comic strip.
Some feel others are here to serve them, others feel they are here to be served. And yet others feel people are here to be used, degraded, or exploited, even as others allow themselves to be exploited.
The simple answer is: It's your choice as to why you're here, and your choice as to why others are here. But take heed, 'cause what you give is usually what you'll eventually get.

We are here to help without asking for any reward. I think that's the true definition of help. Lending a hand without any expectations; same thing with love.

We're not here to help others. We're here to realise there is no distinction between "you" and "others"; we are all One.
