Number 1 thing in football is strength and conditioning. Keep in mind, football plays last only 3 to 8 seconds, so its about being able to have a huge burst of speed every few minutes, not constant running, like basketball. So it is a different kind of conditioning you will be doing.
That in mind, it all depends on your position. Push ups and situps are good, but thats more for body sculpting; you need practical muscle. Not knowing what position you play, the basics that you will need are weightlifting and a lot of cardio. Stamina is everything. As far as specific drills and exercises for your position, I suggest athletes.com as a resource. Tell me your position, and I can give you more detail.
By the way, I'm a former defensive tackle/linebacker in high school and an amateur league, so I've been around the game for a while.

I eat a few hot dogs w/onions and mustard before every sporting event I'm in, including track meets where I run the 400 and the 1600 relay.

LEGS,LEGS,LEGS,everything starts with a good foundation, your legs are your foundation...weight lifting is fine, but nothing beats running.............short sprints as well as distance,,my dad who was a coach also said that in football you needed what he called mean ol nasty strength.which meant to run up and down your stadium stairs,,up and down hills,,and his favorite,,,was to take his truck to a parking lot of the mall or the state park by our house and let me push it all over the place,,
dont overdue it at first,,start slow and work your way up,try to make it as much fun as you can because it can get real old real quick if you dont
also start now by eating and drinking the correct foods
hope this helps

Middle school? High school? College?
i played safety and I really contentrated on running. safetys is a skill posiitons so conditioning gets kinda off. this is what my coach reccomended me and i followed pretty well.
i actually near my home i have a place that has signs that puts up how much feet we have traveled (and i just convert it) but the distances i put down are just reccomendations.
1st day: run 2+ miles (start small and work up, try to aim for 3 or 4 miles in the end)
2nd day: sprint 1/4 miles (as a warm up) (dont forget to strech)
sprint 5 yards for 10 times
sprint 10 yards for 10 times
sprint 20 yards for 10 times
sprint 25 yards for 10 times
3rd day: run 1 miles (as a warm up)
then skill drills, one thing i noticed that i needed most was bursts so i ran this drill: run 10 yards at 1/2 speed, run the next 10 yards at full speed, run 10 yards at 1/2 speed, run the next 10 yards at full speed, and repeat
then do strength drills
-75 situps
-75 squats
-36 bicept curls (i used a 15 lbs dumbbell but u can use more, i'm weak)
- work on a diffrent body part ever so often in which you think you need to work on.
day 4: repeat day 2
day 5: repeat day 3
day 6: repeat either day 2 or day 3 depending on what you think your needs are
day 7: REST!
Eating right is also the key
