My ex-husband filed for custody of our two children and I am wondering what will happen if I don't sign the papers that came in the mail? Can my children be taken away from me? HELP!

You should talk to an attorney, and look into why he wants his children. You cannot avoid the situation, you need to take action and find out what the deal is with the ex. If there is a due date, call family court and find out if you can get an extention to get legal representation. It can be a fight or you can settle for joint custody. It depends on how much you are willing to fight for your kids.

I am not familiar with family law to be able to give you a knowledgeable answer. I think there might be some kind of default if you don't sign the papers and then he will have custody. I am not sure. There are many websites you can check out. First try a website from your state. Every state law is different. You can also try to contact a lawyer. Many law firms will give you free consults. Call one up and ask them what the law is about signing papers. Although the Internet is overloaded with useless sites, there are many with huge amounts of free resources. You just have to be willing to spend a little time researching the topic. Make your phone your friend and call around. I love to find things out on the Internet, so if no one can help you, I will look into it.
