My sister in-law has a size F cup size and she is unable to use a regular breast pump. We tried for an hour yesterday and we cannot seem to get the pump to form a seal around her breast because it is too big to fit into the funnel at all.

Do you know of any special breast pumps for really large breasts?

You could try using a larger breast shield. Medela makes them in XL size and I found them at Babies R Us. Goodluck!

Breast Pumps For Large Breasts

I would suggest calling a lactation consultant or La Leche League leader and ask them. I honestly don't think the size of the breast should matter - it's only the nipple and areola that goes into the breast pump. You might want to try a couple of different pumps. Some pumps work for some moms, other moms need a different style or brand. Usually that's what the problem is. I went through 3 different ones before I found one that worked for me, but it made all the difference!

It's not the size of her breasts that is important, but the size of her nipples. She doesn't need to fit all of her breast into the horn. Her NIPPLE needs to be able to fit into the center of the horn of the pump and pull the nipple AND some areola tissue into the horn.

What kind of pump was she trying to use?

Medela makes different sized horns. If it is a Medela pump, contact the company to buy bigger horns.

I suggest that she contacts a Lactation Consultant or a La Leche League Leader for some help using the pump to make sure she is doing everything correctly.

It may help to get a better seal if she hand expresses a little bit of milk into the horn and spreads it around before placing the horn to her breast. If she has a good seal, she'll see her nipple being drawn into the horn.

If she is engorged, pumping will be difficult. Applying some heat to her breasts (hot pack, hot shower, soaking them in a basin of warm water, hot wet washrag) can help to soften things up to make pumping (or latching on) easier.

The breast pumps are all the same. They have different breast shields for different sized people. I had to get a larger one. You should be able to go to the website of your pump brand and get one. Try www.medela.com. They usually are very helpful. Also call your local hospital and ask for the lactation consultant. They can also help you find a dealer in your area. God Luck!!

The funnel doesn't go around the entire breast. It only needs to cover the nipple and most of the areola. Once the seal is created, suction will do the rest of the work. She'll probably need to massage the outer parts of the breast tissue, but her milk letting down will help more than anything else.

Go to motherhood maternity where they will measure you to help you get the right fit. I nursed 4 kids with their bras. I am still wearing one even though I quit nursing because it's so comfortable. The medela pump in style is awesome! Make sure you get the right bottles that work with it though. Don't get a manual hand pump! They take forever and are very tiring. Also, medela makes a bag that you can use to sanitize everything in the microwave. They are amazing time savers. I know you like underwires, but make sure you get a comfortable sleep bra too. It makes those middle of the night feeding so much easier!

You don't need a whole new breast pump, just the flange (the cup part that goes on the breast. I know that Medela has flanges in different sizes - I would suggest calling the manufacturer of the pump, and asking what they have available.

No, because it's not necessary. The only part that goes in a breast pump is the nipple and areola. You can be an A or a FF, it'll fit. Call a laction consultant if she needs help.
