Hi,

(I posted this earlier today, however, I realized I copied the wrong link in my first post). Last summer, I created a website using Geocities for a camp group. (link below). Being that I was creating it on my own, I wanted to create a free website. It was my first time ever creating a site, and I think I did an OK job. Throughout the summer, however, I noticed that Geocities sites that are free often shut down at times throughout the day when an excess of people visit the website (and when I say excess I mean only like 5 or more people, which is not too many at all). To sum up, for this upcoming summer I wanted to either make a better website to avoid this problem or fix the problem on my current website. If someone can please help me I would greatly appreciate it. I am open to anything, and after creating the website last year, I feel that I have a good background.

The website that I made is:

http://www.geocities.com/bsdc2006/BethSholomDayCampSportsAcademy.html

Thanks

The reason I do not pay for a site is because, like I said before, I made the site without anyone asking me to. I don't think I should pay for a website that is for the camp - not for me. I made it just for fun, I guess.

Thanks, anymore input would be very helpful.

Try another host or make your website smaller!

The problem you are experiencing is probably due to bandwidth, also know and Site Traffic. When people visit your website, it gives out a certain amount of bandwidth, such as 1KB.

Certain hosts, such as GeoCities or Doteasy.com limit bandwidth to either a monthly, weekly, or daily amount. While other hosts give you unlimited bandwidth but don't give you as much space on the server.

I am a website designer and I prefer to outsource all my hosting. I would recommend using netfirms. You can host and build your website there. They have free hosting and free sub-domains if you choose not to pay.

Lets say your camp name is Camp Tangelfoot.

Your web address could look like this:

www.camptanglefoot.netfirms.com

Try them out.

If you do wanna spend 5 bucks or so, you can purchase a domain for the camp even though you said you didn't want to. But then you can get a personalized domain of your choice and if you ask, the camp may re-imburse you.

You can probably cut down on your bandwith by resizing those pictures. You've got medium-sized photos and using html to display them at smaller sizes, so every time someone loads the page they're using however much bandwidth it takes to download all the pictures at full size. You can make smaller duplicates, then if you want, have them link to the full-sized ones so people only have to download the bigger ones if they really want to.

If what you want is to avoid Geocities cutting off your bandwidth, just move your site to a new, free server.

http://www.addyour.net should be just fine; I doubt you'll exceed its bandwidth limitations. It will also give you tools to grow your site if you want to expand / change it.
