I used to make poems or sayings for example start in any sequence you feel comfortable- a-z or northeast, south middlestates, etc. then write down the capitals and the states- and find a pattern for the first letters of each- like HP- the computer company for Harrisburg, Pa, It takes time but unless you have a photographic memory- this is the best way to do it-- you can even make up a song but DO it in some orderly fashion either alphabetical or by area or you will forget and miss some.
good luck

first make a drawing of the us and then you'll start memorizing where the states are. then draw the capitals on the maps. its the fastest way to learn them.

I use online games to teach myself how. It's lots of fun and you learn very quickly.
Check out the link below, it's my favorite one:

test over and over again until you know the states. Make/buy flashcards. study over and over again. know the staes, capitols, birds, motto, and the nickname (the sunshine state, the garden state, etc.)

I'm a big fan of flashcards. I know it sounds cliché as a study method, but I promise it works!
