The Federal Aviation Administration told the newspaper that no controllers saw the object and a preliminary check of radar found nothing unusual.

The sighting was likely caused by a "weather phenomenon," FAA spokesman Elizabeth Isham Cory told the newspaper.

She added: "That night was a perfect atmospheric condition in terms of low (cloud) ceiling and a lot of airport lights.

"When the lights shine up into the clouds, sometimes you can see funny things."

She added the FAA was not investigating the incident.

A spokeswoman for United said company officials did not recall discussing any such incident from November 7.
