It will be cheaper and a helluva more fun than toiling in a US school. However.........

When you come back, even though you're probably a US citizen, your degree may be a crutch. You may be stigmatized as a Filipino nurse more so than as an American nurse. That is a bad thing because employers will want to pay you less and work you harder.

This will be true especally early on in your career, when your resume's focus will be where you graduated from and your clinicals (the Philippines).

My suggestion would be to go to the "best" school there for a couple of years then transfer to the US where you will graduate.

The best of both worlds.

Getting a good education is never a bad idea. If going home to get it is the only way you can, then go for it. Before you go, ask around to the people who would do the hiring. Get their opinion on the value of a nursing degree from the Philippines. I know there were some nursing programs in Hawaii when I lived there in the early 90's. There were many Canadians who went to Hawaii to get their certifications. Most important though is that I would think that a nursing degree from a top name U.S. school would be best, a degree from a Filipino University is better than no degree at all! You may have to take some courses in the US to get certified, but again, ask around and good luck!

Hi,

if you're thinking of coming home and getting a bachelor's degree in Nursing then go ahead and do. The hoopla about the recent board exams will be forgotten sooner or later. Especially because the need for nurses outweighs everything else.

Just make sure you do your research about the school you want to go to. University of Santo Thomas is good and the one in Dumaguete. The tuition in UST is about P48,000 per semester for nursing. That's about a $1000 per semester. Considering the cost of schooling in the US this is a great alternative. Not only is it cheaper it will also be an adventure for you.

If you are concerned about the quality of the schooling don't worry. It's world class, especially if you go to one of the school's I mentioned. Curriculum is based on US standards and books so you won't have a problem once you go back to the US. I'm not sure but you may or may not have to take the local board exams. But I suggest you take the board exams here for practice before you take the board exam in the US.

Also, studying here will give you a lot of experience with patients that you wouldn't get in the US. Sad to say but this is so because most of the time you'll be able to "practice" on people who are poor. But again, this is kind of good for them since they will receive free medical attention that they wouldn't receive anywhere else.

Yup that's a good idea. Obviously it's cheaper even if you include your board and lodging cost. You may not even incur a college loan if you study here. Just be sure to enroll in a reputable nursing school with a good track record. You may not have to take the board exam here, only take the US board exam.

Caveat though is the recent nursing board exam fiasco and it's effects to US employers. And, I don't know if graduating in the Philippines would affect your chances of employment even if you're a citizen although Philippines is one of the main source of nurses.

I think that's the best idea. For one, higher educationis is way lot cheaper in the Philippines than in the US. Second, our education is patterened after that of the Americans and they would not ask you to have another BS if you have one in the Philippines. They will just ask you to take the State Board. I have friends who returned to Manila to study Nursing.

Good luck to you!

Mabuhay!

yes i believe its a good idea..

my sister has a same situation as yours.. i'm persuading her of going back, to take nursing in the philippines..

education here in US pretty expensive.. if she will enroll in the community college, she'll be wait listed.. she knows some friends who were waiting for years to have a slot on that college.. and community colleges i believe don't offer straight nursing courses.. you have to take CNA, then board exam.. study for LVN, then board exam.. then RNA, board exam again.. private schools offer straight courses but would cost around $20k just for enrollment.. unlike in the philippines, after graduating you can fly back here and take the board exam.. i dont think you still have to take the board in the Philippines since you legally reside here in the US..

yeah, make sure the school you're planning to enroll in would be accredited here..

good luck!

I heard that the USA is no longer hiring nursing graduates from the Phil, so you better check that out.

Sounds OK. Go to it, but make sure that the nursing school is tied to a hospital.
