The best way to protect yourself from identity theft is to refrain from using credit cards, debit cards and purchasing or paying bills on line. Use cash whenever you can. Write a check, if necessary. This way, you can always say: where's my signature?
If you want the convenience of electronic payment, you will be setting yourself up for identity theft. Don't play the game and you won't lose. I don't have any credit cards. When I see something on line that I want, I send a check of money order.
A little more work for peace of mind - and financial privacy.

Just spend $100 (or less) and buy a shredder. Reduce that concern to nil.

not so much, which is why it's a good idea to shred everything with your personal info on it before it goes in your trash.
