As an American married to a Canadian and living in Canada, I can assure you that living in Canada is NOT cheaper!! It is considerably more expensive ... even with "free" health care. In regards to that "free" health care .. not only are taxes high to pay for it, but if you make over a certain amount of money (and this affects most people), you have to pay a monthly amount towards it in most provinces. Also, it does not cover optical, dental, prescriptions, or needed appliances, for these things you must either get additional insurance at a cost, or pay out of pocket.

The only place housing is less than in the U.S. would be the prairie provinces, and they are comparable with the midwestern and southern states.

There is a 6% national sales tax (GST), plus 5-8% province tax in most provinces. In B.C. that means you pay a 14% sales tax on everything you purchase.

Food is more expensive, an average of 30% more than in the U.S. Gas is an avg of 95 cents a litre, more in some places. Cell phones are more, and most don't have free long distance included. Electronics and furniture are more.

However, it's a wonderful country to live in, and the extra cost of living is balanced out by the quality of life in my opinion.

Oklahoma is not TOO bad of a place to live...Gas prices are among the cheapest in the nation, cost of living is pretty fair, land values are fairly inexpensive compared to other areas of the country, taxes aren't TOO bad, and there's a fairly good job industry here.

Now the drawbacks...OKC is THE cultural wasteland of the MidWest (but hey, Dallas is only 3 hrs away), and the public school system is on the lower end of the scale.

I'm a Canadian who visits the US at least once per year. The cost of living is higher in Canada due to higher taxes. Fuel, cars, clothing and food are also more expensive. However, the medical system is free and Canadian universities are significantly cheaper than their US counterparts.

It is way cheaper to live in Canada. I know that they have higher prices on many objects, but their gas and housing expenses are much cheaper. Trust me, I have friends in Canada!

It is pretty inexpensive in Nebraska, and a nice place to raise a family. There are many universities, and a promising job market. In fact there are many call center type jobs where you can make a good income even if you dont' have a college education. There are small towns, but many large cities are within close reach.

Utah has the lowest cost of living, apparently, but as in every case, it depends on where you live. Canada is generally more expensive than the U.S.; Canadians are always complaining about how easy we have it in the U.S.
