please give the given, formula, solution and answer. THANKS SO MUCH! :)
1. A rabbit and a turtle are practicing for their big race. The rabbit covers a 30. m practice course in 5.0 seconds, the turtle covers the same distance in 120 seconds. If the actual race is run on a 96 m course, by how many seconds will the rabbit beat the turtle?

2. A tsunami caused by an earthquake occurring in Alaska in 1946 consisted of several huge waves which were found to travel at the average speed of 790 km/hr. The first of the waves reached Hawaii 4 hours 34 minutes after the earthquake occurred. From this data, calculate how far the origin of the tsunami was from Hawaii.

3. An elevator must lift 1000 kg a distance of 100 m at a velocity of 4 m/s. What is the average power the elevator exerts during this trip?

Questions 1 and 2 are not physics questions, but arithmetic (8th grade) questions.

In 3, the distance is irrelevant. One watt is one newton-meter/sec. You have

1000 * 9.8 * 4 watts

okay to answer 1 and 2 you will need to form a proportion and cross multiply. then subtract and add then find a percent......its quite simple actually.....you dont really do it that way.

#1. well if you watched your cartoons as a child you will know that the rabbit is so over confident and he rubs it in the turtles face at how slow the turtle is then the rabbit goes to sleep.....and doesnt wake up as planned. the turtle then passes the rabbit and just before the turtle passes the finish line the rabbit awakens and rushes to beat the turtle but the rabbit is unsuccesful.

but that is in the cartoons. so let me get serious. here is how to answer the first question. well if there speed is constant then you will just have to find out at what speed they are going then determine how long it will take each animal to complete the race. what is speed......distance traveled over a period of time.
i.e 20 mph

so the rabbit ran 30 meters in 5 seconds or 6 meters a second. and the turtle went 30 meters in 120 seconds or 1 meter every 4 seconds. so now the rabbit goes 6 meters in one second. so if it has to travel 96 meters it will take it 16 seconds. the turtle can only travel one meter every 4 seconds. so for the turtle to travel 96 meters at 4 meters per second it would take the turtle a total of 384 seconds.

so
rabbit=16 seconds
turtles=384 seconds

find the diffrence in time and that is your answer to number one.
but all you had to do to find that was take you given information and put the time it took the rabbit to complete the practice course over the distance of the practice course then you cross multiply that with the unknown time (A) to complete the acutal race over the distance of the actual race. once you cross multiply you will have to divide both sides by 30 to find the variable wich is the time it would take to complete the actual race.....you do the same with the information on the turtle.

#2 once again you form a proportion to find the unknown variable. so take what you know and fill in the blanks. 790 km traveled for every one hour. but to do that you will have to conver hours to minutes because you cant have both if you are going to form a proportion. so how many minutes are in 4 hours and 34 minutes 274 mins.

so

790 (variable)
____ = _______

60 mins 274 mins

790x274=60x(variables)
216,460=60x(variable)

now divide 216,460 by 60 which equals=3,607.6 repeating.

so there is your answer it was 3,607.6 km
