There are many other color options. You might try charcoal gray, plum, blackest brown, etc. You might also consider toning down your black eye liner by smudging it with a light/medium colored shadow. You could do the same to the brown eyeliner...enhance it by smudging it with dark shadow.
Have you ever tried just lining your top lid with black? It really brings out your eyes in a glamorous way, but isn't so dramatic that it overwhelms your eye.

There are so many shades of black and brown liners these days... I found that using a wet brush and powder eyeshadow works really well and lasts much longer than pencils. I did have good luck with Clinique pencils (with the rubber blending tips) in dark green, navy, and dark gray.
You didn't mention your eye/skin/hair color, so you'll have to experiment to find what works best for you. Using a contrasting color is really flattering (e.g. plum liner for green eyes, brown/rust for blue eyes, etc.).
I have very light skin, dark hair, and blue eyes. I apply MAC eyeshadow in "Mulch" (sounds awful, but it's a really pretty brown), with a wet slanted brush. "Club" works well, too. It's a charcoal color. I've had both eyeshadows for several years and they're still going strong.
Good luck!

No, I have a better solution!
Apply eyeline to your top lid (in a thick line) and you bottom inner rims.
After applying the top liner use a small sponge or your finger to smudge the harsh line you just made. If you wear eyeshadow it will blend much easier and look alot more natural!
Good luck!

Try grey.. I have pale skin and blue eyes and I find that black is too heavy for me. I wouldn't be able to stop using eyeliner.. it's so glamorous. :)

Hell no. Eyeliner is almost always a GOOD thing unless you're asian. Try a darker grey. Chanel is a good brand to try.
