They are tearing up my yard. I learned that they don't kill the grass, but the tunnels push up and cause tripping hazards and generally soft and muddy situations. What should I do to try to grow grass successfully.

I wouldn't waste my time on trying to grow grass until you get rid of the moles. And they are buggers to get rid of. Call an exterminator. They have several methods to rid them from your lawn, including poisoning them as well as more humane methods. Regardless, until you get rid of the source of the problem, you're always going to be tripping over your lawn. Hope this helps.

You have to get rid of their food source or kill them with traps or poison. Moles feed largely on white grubs just under the roots of grass. These grubs are the larvae of japanese and june beetles.
To get rid of the grubs you need to use a commercial insectice twice annually, or treat your lawn with Milky Spore Disease. This fungus attacks only the soft bodied grubs of the beetle family . This method takes about two years to be completley successful, and three or more applications. I know it sounds sloww and costly , but it is actually cheaper than insecticide after the first two
years. It will spread and infect all your grubs and continue to move along until it runs out of food, i.e. a road or river etc.

Run a hose, such as a vacuum cleaner hose, from your car exhaust into the hole and run the engine for 10 min. Cover any other holes where you see smoke. This worked very well for me and it will help you find tunnels you diddn't know were there.

There is a compound sold at stores like home depot. Put it on your lawn in fall and spring along with your seed. It is good for getting rid of moles.
