My computer will not recognize my ipod nano. What can I do?

I put the ipod nano into my computer and it will not recognize it. It always malfunctions and does not recognize it. As a result, I cannot put any songs onto my ipod. Why is it doing this? The USB works for a short time, then crashes and won't do anything.

there is a new product out called Tune Tools for Ipod, i got mine at staples for 20.00, it allows you to bypass itunes and use your own music library. it does everything itunes does, but gives you all the control. it also does repairs and checks, you can use your ipod on any computer with it. hope this helps
