Many of those who actually did the exploring really did do so for the sake of exploration. However, many more did so in hopes of gaining recognition for their exploits.
As for those who financed the explorations, most of them did so with the expectation of getting more than their money back. Shorter trade routes equal less overhead and more profit. New lands equal new goods to sell. And so on.
Another major factor for the age of exploration coming when it did was that Europe was, believe it or not, starting to get a little crowded -- especially with people who were unhappy with how things were being run in their respective countries. Sending out explorers to find new lands meant new places for people to settle, and new places to send old problems.

new reasources, new markets, new colonies and new people to exploit. That's for the financial bakers. As for the explorer, he just does it to do it. To see what's over the hill. to boldly go where no man has gone before. And the kudos that go along with that.

Simple: They wanted gold, spices, colonies and they were in a race with each other to see who could get the most the fastest.
