It is suggested that flytraps feed themselves daily by letting them catch their own food even in their dormant period! If you are worried about their health just feed them crickets or worms or ants or something you can find in a typical backyard. If you cant find anything just go to petsmart and buy 20 crickets for 10 cents each! Thats nothing!

You don't need to feed any carnivorous plant becasue they are very good at getting their own food - resurch in the last 10 years has found that venus flytraps need a little bit of nutrents to survive so you could use a slow release fitiser but you really not need to feed them

During the winter, Venus Flytraps experiance a dormancy period so feeding them is not required. Springtime, when the plant starts to come out of dormancy, they perfer insects that are about the third of the trap size. I also feed mine dried bloodworms that are sold as fish food. The trick to feeding a VFT this way is to somehow stimulate the tiny trigger hairs that are inside the trap to make it think it has a live insect trapped. That's what triggers the final digestion stage. After a trap is fed and digests it's prey, it will begin to re-open. The trap must be allowed to re-set itself before it can complete the cycle again. I wouls suggest buying the Ebook from Sarracenia Northwest "Secrets to Growing Carnivorous Plants in Your Home and Garden". http://www.cobraplant.com/cmd.php?af=385276

You don't have to feed them. Venus fly traps can live a long time without ever eating a fly. Just make sure you them with rain water for best results Indigenous to in the states of the Carolinas.

However, never feed them hamburger meat as suggested on websites as it has fats and can kill the plant. Also, try not to play with the traps because the more energy it expends, the shorter the life of the trap.
