If you want to take your phone to another carrier, you're looking to get it unlocked. One way of doing that could be flashing the phone. Flashing can permanently damage your cell phone if done incorrectly or interrupted. You can load another carrier's software onto the phone this way which is good if you want to have everything their phone have. Flashing requires a data cable and special software. Not every phone has flash files publically floating around the internet and not every phone will unlock when flashed.

Sometimes the data cable can be used to unlock the phone without flashing it. Sometimes you can get the carrier to give you the subsidy code, especially if you have been with them for awhile. Just tell them you want to use a prepaid sim overseas in your phone.
