i am wondering if saddam died insitantly....because his neck snapped, right? ir did he hang there and suffer. the video i saw was cut off and it said it stopped just before the "neck snapped". Does this mean he did not feel any pain and suffering for more than an instant?

A professional hangman calculates the weight of a victim in order to determine the length of the rope and "drop." If done properly, hanging snaps the neck and the person dies instantly.

If a rope is too short, then the person slowly strangles. A too long rope and drop can decapitate a person.

I saw a photograph of Saddam in death in al-Jazeera which appeared to have been taken shortly after the hanging. His eyes were closed and he looked at peace. Of course, he did not deserve to be hanged but since he was, at least he did not suffer.

If you call walking down the hall knowing you are about to hang as being free of suffering........

The spinal cord is snapped immediately and a person does'nt feel anything. He is a scumbag and deserved to die for the things he did - but we couldn't fly in some lethal injection or something??? Hanging seems very third world - although there are a couple of states here that actually offer it as an option! Bizarre. I wonder if people actually chose that??

The noose should be set correctly, the knot should be on the side, not all the way at the back of the neck. This way the knot jerks the spine severing the spinal column, death is virtually instantaneous. If the drop is from to high, the head is torn off. If it is to short, it is death by strangulation,,,not very pleasant.

Even if it is done correctly, the body will spasm and jerk from random firings of the nerves as there is no control from the brain to manage the impulses.

The cervical vertebrae break, which severs the spinal cord. If it is done right, the person won't feel anything and won't suffer. If not done right (ie the rope is too short or the person doesn't weigh enough, they will strangle to death which could take 3 to 5 minutes).

The feeling of getting hanged the next day or the next moment is itself dying 1000 times each second. This suffering is more than just being hanged.

So he has actually suffered alot.

It is instantanous death. He probably felt pain for a split second then he was out like a light. He got lucky actually. I think beheading someone which he did mercilessly to countless innocent people in his country (often in front of their own homes or their families homes!) is a much more gruesome and painful way to be executed.

Who , after being hung, ever came back to clarify this ques. We know many have suffered immensly with lethal injections. The last one in Fla. took 34 min to kill the prisoners. Jeb , to his credit has decleared a moratorium.

If it took a few minutes then I'm sure he felt it. He probably didn't suffer near as much as most of his victims did.
