Sometimes doctors will suggest a C section with each child IF you had one with your first. There is a chance your womb could burst open with normal childbirth IF you have already had one. Of course, in the end, it is YOUR choice. Good luck. Pops

As long as you are having a normal pregnancy, with no high risk complications, you may want to find a doctor or midwife who will support your decision to have a vaginal birth after Cesarean (VBAC). It is not true that once a Cesarean, always a Cesarean. The problem is that lately doctors don't want to take on a VBAC because of liability issue, or it may just be that hospital's policy and not the doctors to not allow VBAC's. If this is something you really want, then you will have to do your research and most likely make some changes.

As far as strength of uterine incision, if you have a horizontal cut, studies have shown that there is no greater risk of uterine rupture. And if you had a vertical cut, get your surgery records and find out if they did a vertical cut only on the skin, or did they do a vertical cut also through the uterus. Sometimes they do a vertical cut on the outside and then a horizontal cut on the inside. It's the horizontal cut on the inside is what you want for a VBAC.

If you can not find someone who will help you with a VBAC and don't want to travel to someone who will, or if for some reason a c-section really is necessary but the health of the baby is not at risk, you can work with your doctor as far as c-section timing. Ideally you should be able to wait until you go into labor and then go in for the c-section. This is a great way to do it because you know for sure the baby is really ready to be born, and labor is a healthy experience for both baby and mom.

Good luck!

The risk of injury from a repeat c-section is the same as a VBAC so it really is your choice. The risk isn't greater if you have a vaginal delivery after a c-section....but most doctors tend to go with the c-section because it's easier for them, and it's predictable. It's a misconception that a repeat c-section is "safer" than a VBAC.

However, it's by no means necessary that you have a repeat c-section. The risks of uterine rupture are very low and again, serious risks from VBAC are about the same as serious risks from a repeat c-section.

Some hospitals do not allow VBACS so it's important to know what your hospital's policy is so you can plan ahead.

Good luck and I hope you get the birth you want next time!

More conservative doctors planned on a 2nd C-section if you delivered that way the first time. Also it may depend upon whether you had a vertical or horizontal incision.

Why not talk to your doctor? You haven't indicated how far along you are with your pregnancy, so there are other posts that will indicate good reasons for a second 2nd C-section such as a breech (traverse) pregnancy or a large baby. These may or may NOT end up in a C-section (I carried a child breech -- butt down, not traverse -- and was able to deliver normally, but she turned before labor.)

If you have a high-risk pregnancy, your doc may have other reasons too. Talk to him or her!!

It will generally be scheduled on your due date, but the doctor will let the hospital know that whenever you come in, you will need a c-section unless the baby happens to have turned. I don't think they would worry unless you are 37 weeks plus and the baby is still breech.

If you want a VBAC find a doctor that will support you.

If you are having a second c-section for sure they schedule it because planned c-sections are "safer" than emergency c-sections.

I had a c-section(emergency) with my first baby, and now I'm scheduled for my 2nd in 5 weeks. They don't want me to go into labor fearing that I could burst my scar on my uterus.

because doctor's don't want to risk an emergency c-section on a second pregnancy. there may be complications or while giving natural birth to the baby you may rip the old c-section scars to where they'd have no choice but to operate anyways. I don't know maybe it's because MOST doctors are smarter than the patients they take care of they they recommend what's best for their patients because the patients don't REALLY know WTF they're doing or what their bodies are REALLY going through or GOING to go through. ASK YOUR DOCTOR!

I've heard that once you have a C-section natural birth is often doesn't work so well, so they schedule one to be ready for it.

It's supposed to be easier for you and the doctor. They do it so that you have an appointment. Therefore you are not just coming in WHENEVER your body feels it is time to. That way you and the hospital is prepared.
