Seems likely he has a Ph.D if he is teaching at that reputed university. Address him as Dr. Anthony Cunningham when intoducing him at formal gatherings or to other friends of similar academic standing. Otherwise, simply call him Jos (Joseph), Dan (Daniel), or Tony (Anthony) in casual settings.
I presume, if he successfully went through that tedious and trying experience, sometimes feeling like an idiot, running after evasive more senior professional colleagues, dissertation chapters in hand, he has now been humbled enough to value simplicity (the hallmark of intellectualism). Just call him Tony!

I have my Phd and am not hung up on the Dr title. IF he is a friend of yours and you are somewhat alone, first name basis is usually ok. If however you are in a classroom or hallway where there are other people around, you should address him by Dr. as that is his title and it would show respect for him and the title that he has earned.
Like others have said, ask him what he would like to be called, as some people, like myself, are not hungup on the Dr. title and would prefer to be called by my first name even in a crowd of other people.

Ask him how he prefers to be addressed. Nobody would possibly take offense at that. I have a friend who is a Chiropractor and asked him if he preferred to be addressed as Dr or just 'Tad' which is his first name. He seemed flattered that I asked and said I could call him whatever I like.

It is a sign of respect to refer to him as Dr. if he has acheived his doctorate. If you two are close friends, you should feel comfortable enough to be on a first name basis with him. However, I would always call him Doctor in lieu of Mister.

Dr. is generally reserved as address for those who have completed medical school or divinity school. Professor is fine most PHD's don't use the Dr. honorific, but yes just ask.

If he is a friend you should call him by his first name. Don't call him prof. he hasn't gotten that far yet. Does he have his dr. if so you could call him dr. if not first name.

Out of respect you should refer to him as Doctor, if he/she has acheived their doctorate.
If the doctor friend asks you to call them by another name/title only then it would be appproriate to.

Not sure on this one, as i don't know any professors, but since it is your friend, i would call them by their first name, unless they are really snooty and would take offense to this. (I have a PhD or whatever they have, so they should call me________). that type of person. since it is your friend, just ask them. you should be able to talk to your friends about anything.
