Corrugated cardboard and lots of tissue paper and crepe paper tufts. Form the cardboard into a circle to form the basic cake and take crumbled balls of tissue or crepe paper and glue all over the outside. Cut a large circle for the top, connect it to the cake with duct tape to make a hinge( facilitates the surprise part of the jumping out) and decorate with more crumbled tissue paper. If you need candles, use the cardboard core from rolls of paper towels and cover with crepe paper streamers.

Having made a few different props etc... I suggest that you see if you can get hold of a couple of refridgerator boxes from a white goods outlet.

They are strong but also bend easily. Much easier than trying to put lots of little pieces together. Use lots of strong tape too.

Use you imagination to decorate. See if you can find some sort of flat packing trolley to be wheeled in on.

Good luck. Hope it goes well.
