just noticed a somewhat thick, flaky white powdery substance on my TV screens and light fixtures, etc. after just cleaning them 4 days ago! there has been no drywall, construction in the house. and it was on the bedroom tv really thick like dust that hasnt been cleaned off in 3 months. i was on there before last week, when i run my finger over it its pale white in color and isnt like dust, this is powdery. I DONT KNOW WHAT IT IS! IS IT TOXIC IS IT POISONOUS!? I got little kids here in the morning. the only thing that i can think of is a cool mist humidifyer that ive been running in the rooms where the white poweder has been accumulating and perhaps the moisture in the air mixed with the dust is creating this?? does anyone know anything about this?

It has to do with the humidifier, but it's not mildew. It's calcium dust from the water you have in there. Try adding a softener to the water...you can buy this at the same place you bought the humidifier...and also clean out the filter in the humidifier. Don't panic. It's nothing toxic.

I don't think what you are describing is toxic. I'm not sure what it is, but it probably has to do with the humidifier.

This is going to sound like a really stupid question, and I don't mean to insult you - just curious and trying to help you solve the mystery. But...have you by chance used a powdered carpet deodorizer that may have settled on surfaces in that room? Have you vacuumed recently, or changed a vacuum bag? I know that carpet powder settles and then "fogs" all over the place when you change the bag, etc.

Hope you find out what it is.

Yes, it is probably the humidifier. I have the same problem when I run my humidifier. Clean your screen good, don't run the humidifier and check the screen. Then run the humidifier overnight and check the screen. You will find the white powered dust on it. No, it isn't toxic.

My humidifier gets white gunk too, and we have really hard h2o. Just dust, and don't run the humidifier for a couple days. If the problem goes away, just go get a new himidifier.

It must be mildew caused by the cool mist humidifyer. That happens when too much moisture gets into a room.

my best guess is that the white powder is lime from the humidifier.

turn the humidifier off for a few days and see what happens.
