When I was a boy in junior high school (Hartford County, Md) I ran a trap line after school I used to carry a .22 pistol in my pack so I could dispatch injured animals when I checked my traps on the way home. I still have that pistol...it is a bad pistol now....probably due not to my values but those of Hollywood where it is difficult to figure out who the good guys are (seen a Segal movie lately?). Later in High school I lived in
Texas....where very few kids had a car...some drove the family pickup to school...all of which had at least one and sometimes two loaded weapons in racks in the window of the cab. We left the keys in the ignition so we wouldn't lose them and normally the windows were left open cause it was so hot. Funny thing was that due to our values ( from our families and Roy Rogers), no one ever got shot, no vehicles ever got stolen, and the only guy that ever got cut was a guy who was playing mumby peg outside during lunch. Every boy who was a boy (apparently another issue these days) carried a folding pocket knife. The guns haven't changed, the knifes haven't changed. What has changed is the way we entertain ourselves, the way we educate children and the way we don't deal with law breakers.
You should read the Federalist Papers. See exactly why we have a second amendment. It is not about hunting Virginia. Every American citizen non felon not only should, they should be required to do so and be trained accordingly by the government sponsored school system.

The republicans. I am not a friend of the NRA but do believe we all have a right to own handguns. However, like a car, we should be trained in the use of weapons before owning one.
The democrats would disarm us all but the truth is that violent crime is reduced by an increase in legal gun ownership. I can't figure out how they can justify trying to take guns away from the people with that simple fact staring them in the face. It is an utterly irrational stand. Once we are disarmed we become victims but they do not seem to care about that fact.

Traditionally Republicans support gun ownership. If you feel strongly about it, the NRA is pretty much THE organization to pay attention to.
