my friend .
it means he supports you .
don't worry , it's not what you are afraid it is .

edit
if a woman says this , it means "boyfriend" or "lover" or "husband"

if a man says this , for example :
hey , joe , my MAN !
it simply means
hey, joe, my DEAR FRIEND!
but in a cool, masculine way .

edit
im starting to suspect you actually WANT IT to mean something else .

Is he also Asian? Because if he is, then he knows that you might feel uncomfortable.
Depending on your age group, his age group, and the party 's age group My man means

1. the one in command, leader, higher authority or reversed -servant
2. friend- a friend who is a boy, or bestfriend, or a brother
3. a dumb comment that makes you think "why on earth cant he use an easier word that I can understand."

Sorry. Your friend is not a good English teacher. He is probably also learning the language himself.

It means "boyfriend" but "boyfriend" sounds childish. So some people say it a different way.
