No you're not the only Americans. In fact you live in a continent called "America", but wisely you divided it in two so that you can call yourselfes "America". But we still consider that America is a continent:
http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/America
http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Am%C3%A9rica
While you try to use new artifitial names for the continent like: "the Americas" or the infamous "Western Hemisphere". Maybe you have heard of the "PanAmerican games" and the "Organization of the American States".
The division of the American continent was one of the most weird things the anglo civilization has ever done. It can not be justified geographically and much less politically.
I forgive you for using "American", cause there is no other option, but there is no excuse for using "America".
Obviously when they gave the "United States of America" name the meaning of the "of" in the name was: "that belongs to". And the proof is the existence of the "Confederate States of America". Two countries with the same name?
To say that the "America" is internationally recognized as the name of the United States is a mistake, and here is a proof:
http://www.olympic.org/uk/athletes/results/search_r_uk.asp
In the option "choose a continent" you'll see that you have the "America" option, not the "South America" option and the "North America" option. This is the site of the International Olympic Committe.

Sometimes there's a difference between a word's origin and what society turns the word into. For example, a fag (f, to the a, to the g... they block it if I just say the word, which is exactly my point here:) is normally a barrel of hay, yet our society gave it a different meaning. Words mean whatever the majority wants it to mean, and the majority (including other countries) want it to mean just those from the U.S. The origin of the word may mean anyone from North or South America, but if that's not what the majority nowadays wants it to mean, that's not what it means.
On a different note, Americans are so narcissistic because we're a bunch of assholes (not everyone, just the majority).

It's not bragging if you can back it up.
If Canadians and and anyone south of the Rio Grande want to call themselves Americans they can feel free to, but nobody will know what the hell they're talking about.

The name United States of America has gotten shortened by people speaking of the nation to just America, so it's those people who started referring to us as Americans. Canada and Mexico don't have America in their name and are one word, so they didn't bother with them. Quit being so narcissistic and thinking that we are at fault.

Mexicans and Canadians have their own pride.
All people in the world have equal pride to worship God and to love each other.
Racist thoughts will fade with broader knowledge.
