G'day,
I agree with the first answerer. It is best to leave as early as possible to avoid any disappointment. I understand that you want to take the picture of 12 Apostles at dusk, but you can always get back after visiting the other places, since you are planning to stay overnite in Port Campbell.
In day 2, Port Campbell to Melbourne Tullamarine airport via Princes Highway can be done in abt 3 to 3.5hrs. If your airport is in Avalon (using Jetstar Airline), then the travel time is even shorter by 30min.
I am attaching some weblinks that hopefully can assist you in planning your trip. The first one is the map, the second one is what to see in Great Ocean Road.
Enjoy your trip and drive carefully, since Great Ocean Road trip can be very demanding.

Thats just not enought time, If you want to see the twelve apostiles, by the way there are only about 6 left I think, you should leave Melbourne a bit earlier, say about 8am, drive down check out Port Fairy, and Lorne, check out everything along the Great Ocean road in the first day, book into Port Campbell for the night, Motel. Have dinner there, have a good sleep and then drive back first thing in the morning, its not exactly around the corner, and you can spend hours along the road checking out the gorges and blow holes etc etc etc . You really need more time than that, but hey!! Give it a go, you can see it all in the first day as long as you leave early, but to be back in Melbourne to catch a 1pm fight you better leave Port Campbell early, you may have car problems and then you'll be stuck, cheers....PS. Let me know how many Appostles are left? I saw all 12 about 30 years ago, I even drove onto the London Bridge, thats all collapsed now, it was raw, rugged and beautiful back then, still is beautiful but all fenced off now and like I said alot of things have changed, the sea has worn and eroded a lot away. Have fun....

Yes stay there and you will love it At Port Campbell. But you are wasting your time. 2 Days to run the Great Ocean Road? to see it properly try for at least 1 week, There is so much to see and do along the "Road' you need the extra time. I guess you will be on a tight schedule but try and get the extra days. Accommodation? When traveling any where in Victoria for cheaper and best accommodation use the "Cabins" found in Caravan (trailer ) Parks. they are fully set out ,TV,Radio,Beds, stoves, ect and very clean and cheap. I will recommend them. Think about it but most of all do it Good luck. LFE I am from New South.

the 12 Apoatles have now been reduced to about 4 due to erosion... If u can afford it take a helicopter trip, there is a pad there a 15 minute trip cost about $100 well worth it
