i saw the one made in the late 70's and it was supposed to be based on a true story but heres an article about it at wikepedia
Connection to actual events
The film, like the films Psycho, Deranged, and The Silence of the Lambs, was loosely inspired by Ed Gein. Gein did wear human skin, but he acted alone and did not use a chainsaw. Although the film's opening would have one believe that the events are factual, it is merely a scare tactic, called the false document technique, to frighten the audience. Libraries in Burkburnett, Texas and nearby Wichita Falls regularly receive requests for copies of newspaper articles related to the false actual events.
so it would appear that its a crock of poo-poo, not true, fiction with a kick.

It's based on true events in an alternate reality where things in movies are real, the tooth fairy is your best friend, Santa is a woman, and time runs backwards. All of the gnomes dance around the marmalade fountain, the pixies all have gumdrop shoelaces, and Leatherface is real in this alternate reality wonderworld of terror and amazement.
Geez, it's a freaking movie. A director can take a sliver of a true story and warp it until the true parts of the story are buried so deeply within the plot and still say that it's 'based on true events.'
Based....that means that the truth is at the bottom and all these layers of fluff and gallons of fake blood are over the top.

Yes, I did know that it was not real. It is based ot this guy that took out bodies that were buried and he cut them into pieces. But it is true that he did skin people, not for a mask but to cover furniture and stuff.....nasty.
