My boyfriend and I are going to a Military Winter Ball this month. He will not wear a uniform. His style is VERY casual (he only wears surfer clothing) and has never owned a suit. We have gone to Men's Wearhouse and nothing looks right. He either looks like he's going to a PTA meeting or to a mafia casting call. We are a young couple (I'm 21 and he's 23), but we can't find something formal/business casual to wear without him looking old. Zoot suits are out - they are ugly and tuxedos are hideous. HELP!!! pls add websites. THANK YOU!!!

I had the same problem a few years ago. My husband (we are now in our mid-20's) is a plumber, and I am an accountant! We compromised and he wore a very nice cashmere blend sweater with dress slacks and dress shoes. The shoes are important. As long as the clothing is clean and pressed, it doesn't need to be a tux. For a military ball, maybe pair a nice matching suit coat with the look to look dressed up without needing to have the tie.
If everyone is expected to be truly formal though, a suit may be your only way out. A well-fitted suit will make any man appear like he has confidence, but don't just fall into the trap that any suit will do. Have him get fitted at a high-end store and THEN you can shop around for your budget. If he wants to appear more confident in suits, I have seen that a bright blue button up shirt with a gold tie really stand out for a dark grey or black suit, which makes it look more modern as well. Hope this helps - have fun at your ball!!!

Sorry to tell you, but he should be in some kind of suit, even if it's separates and not a matched set. But honestly, if he's enlisted, he should be in his dress uniform.

Maybe the reason he looks less than wonderful in the suits he's tried on is that they are the wrong style for his body type. Just like women, men have various body types, and specific clothing styles that will flatter, or not, him the best. This is a VERY brief guide for choosing the right suit style.

You are also more than likely putting him in traditional cuts and styles, when at 23, he belongs in something more modern. Mix it up a bit with a jacket longer or shorter than normal. Try other necklines than the boring notch or peak, like the no-collar look of a Mandarin.

Using the guidelines for his body type, do a search at a good on-line store for tuxedos, suits, or even dinner jackets that match that criteria. Then find local stores that carry that brand, and have him try them on. Try on different jackets for a more youthful version of the classic black tux. And it doesn't have to be all black. It can be gray, navy, white, or any other color that he wants.
Then try skipping the bow tie, and use an ascot or some other neckwear for a different look. He can always take his neckwear off later in the evening, but he should show up in tie and jacket to show his respect for the event, if nothing else.

A button down shirt, nice slacks, and a tie. You have to wear nice shoes too. I think you should rent a tux and wear converse Chucks. Then it would be fromal, but not too formal ;) Hope that helps!

Depend how much he wants to invest, try H&M. the cutting of the suit very european and very affordable and very weekend causal . If there is a Zara shop near you, you are lucky. If for the pricy stuff, i will try Saks 5th Ave.

You can take him to a place that rents tux and they might be able to provide some suggestions and take some measurements to enhance his features.
