I can understand why you're worried but things will work out. I assure you. And college might likely be the best time of your life.
Before I went to college, I literallly had spent 99.99%+ of my life in my birthplace/hometown and had never spent a night away from both of my parents. Sheltered, maybe, but that's how it was.
(To be fair, I should mention that I kind of wanted to get away from my parents, too, but...)
My college was 700 miles away from home which meant I could only come home on breaks and that I wouldn't be near any family relatives or any of my old friends. I was sort of worried that people wouldn't like me and I would be lonely and that sort of thing.
But it didn't turn out that way. To be sure, it wasn't all happiness and roses (my first roommate can attest to that) but I made some new friends, really enjoyed and relished my classes, and also began to enjoy the independence I had to make my own decisions without consulting somebody else (not really big decisions, of course, you should tell your parents about the big things).
Yes, the first few weeks, I did get kind of homesick but I adapted and made my college my new home. I also did not have the benefit of going to a college in a metropolitan area (my college is in the boonies) so I think you might have an easier time since you'll be surrounded by the diversions of Atlanta and NYC (if by NY, you mean the city).

I'm a junior too and I'm not too scared about it now.
Now what is it that makes you want to go to a college in Atl. or NY? You might want to consider some colleges that are closer to home if you're really nervous about leaving home.
If you are really determine to move out, then try to see if any friends are applying for the same college. Friends can be great support.
I personally don't think it's that bad, but then again, the college I have in mind is a 30 minute drive on the freeway.
Also, if you live in a dorm, you won't be alone that much and it'll be a good chance for you to grow. You'll meet new people and make more friends.
Well, best of luck to you.

College is great and it sounds for what I am hearing you could use a chance to get away from home for a while. Everyone is scared to leave home - but I think the experience will be very good for you. However, if you feel too scared to consider going far away why look at such distance places from where you live (if either of them are) and look for a more local college - possibly a good state university which will cost you less and allow you to go home on the weekends if you want.
Good Luck!!!

It is a scary thing to really leave home for the first time and not be with your family. You will get adjusted to the new college life and make some wonderful friends that will last a life time, and get a good education. Best of luck to you.

This may be the most exciting adventure of your life. Welcome the opportunity to spread your wings. You know your way home. With computers and technology the only thing we can't do is smell Mama's cookin'- and I bet they're working on that. This is the time to discover yourself and who you are is a product of those people. Keep your name clean. It's your most valuable possession. Take the love of your family with you and visit them as often as you can. College is for studying- not partying and carousing- you can mess your life up later if you feel the need. Higher education is expensive. Make the most of it. Have fun with it. It's a privledge. Good luck sweetie and God bless.

Leaving home can be scary, but it can be alot of fun, too! You get to do all kinds of new things, meet all kinds of new people, etc. If you're really freaked out about it though, why not go to school closer to home? You could start out at a local university or community college, and transfer after a couple of years if you want to go further away.

This makes you a scare-d-kat. Also know as chicken. In a year you will be ready to take on the world and run up a cell phone bill to higher levels. It happens all the time.

Deal with it. You'll be fine. If you really don't want to leave your hometown go to college there. It might be cheaper.
