this depends on how severe the fracture is...

but my first question is-how do you know you have a skull fracture if you've haven't sought medical treatment? the only way to diagnose a fracture (especially with the head) is by getting an xray and possibly a head ct scan.

skull fractures are usually not treated unless they are severe-in this case surgery is required to fix the break.

if it's not treated, pressure inside the brain (called ICP intra-cranial pressure) can build up to dangerous levels, causing the brain to "suffocate" itself which causes all sytems in the body to shut down eventually leading to death

it can also cause bleeding inside the brain depending on what type of break was caused. if the skull shattered, small bone fragments could implant inside brain tissue causing small or large bleeds inside the brain.

i'm hesitant to believe that it's an untreated skull fracture if you know you have one-a dr would not leave it untreated once it's been diagnosed.....

If its recent, the portion of the skull that is fractured can cause the inner linings and skin around the head to bleed and brooze causing a hematoma and undue pressure on the brain. That is bad. If that hasn't happened and it has been a while, it may just have all fused back together like normal or maybe even with a bump or ridge there.

The issue with any head trauma is the swelling of tissues and consequent pressure on the brain which can cause permanent damage. The outside of the head will not give you accurate information on how badly injured the brain is. If the injury caused a concussion to the brain it will swell within the boney cavity causing pressure to build up. This pressure can be deadly as it slowly destroys brain tissues. I think the worst thing, other than death is to lose your personality, or your ability to walk, talk, think or do anything you were able to do before and would have otherwise been able to do if you had sought immediate medical attention.

You're fine. If anything was going to happen, it would have in the first month. And odds are, you had a "dent" in your skull before the injury and just never noticed it.

Swelling of the brain and then death. Breathing is usually the first to stop.
