If you have a wireless LAN router that connects you to the internet, you are already good to go, as the Wii has built in wireless LAN.
If you don't have a WLAN router, I'd highly suggest you get one, as it will be helpful to connect future consoles or Laptops to the internet easily.
If you only can connect through a network cable, you will need the network adapter.

If you have a wireless connection in your home, no. As long as your connected to the internet, your good.
If you need to connect to a wired connection, you need it. I don't think Nintendo has released it
