Symptoms of Diverticulitis:
abdominal pain
tenderness in the left side of lower abdomen
When infection is present:
fever
nausea
vomiting
chills
cramping
constipation
Could be a ruptured diverticulum. Which is very serious. Requires immediate surgery. A family member had this a few months ago. Had an emergency temporary colostomy.

Diverticulitis is caused by small hard pieces of food such as seeds getting stuck in little pockets in the intestine. Things to avoid while this heals is any food with seeds, lettuce and spicy foods. While he is having this pain, he should eat only a bland diet. Your husband might want to increase his soluable fiber with a product such as Metamucil once his pain is gone.
Did the doctor look at your husband's gallblader? It sounds like it could be that.

I used to get regular attacks of diverticulitis until I had the sigmoid portion of my colon surgically removed last summer. The pain was in the abdomen and it got progressively worse with each attack. I was on Cipro and Flagyl for weeks at a time. Eventually, after the attacks came more and more frequently, my doctor told me to get the surgery and I'm glad I did because it's nice to be pain free!!

I have it and had such severe pain I was hospitalized. The pain has gone away and never returned because I am careful about my diet. A person with diverticulitis can never ever eat nuts or seeds. No berries or nuts of any kind are allowed.

It is the development of balloon like pouches in the GI tract that fill with food matter but I am unaware of vomit or diarrhea symptoms.

the lower left side sounds more like kidney stones, please have him go to er if it does not stop. the other things that could cause diarre/vomiting could be gallbladder (upper r abdomen/through back) pancreas(center of abdomen/through back). if eating and or drinking anything (including water) he should be at the hospital.

oif he eats seeds of any kind and he is dying in pain, he might have it. You won't know for sure unless he gets a colonoscopy so they can see if he has any pockets.
