To replace the voltage regulator, you will need to remove and dissemble the alternator! The voltage regulator is located inside the alternator.
You would be better off just replacing the entire alternator!

A remanufactured alternator which includes the voltage regulator for your '89 Chevy 305 costs about $75 and a new alternator costs about $120. I have never had any problem with a remanufactured alternator.
Use an inexpensive voltmeter to measure the battery voltage with the engine running. If it is around 13 or 14 volts then the alternator and voltage regulator are working fine. If it is low, around 11 volts, or high, above 15 volts, then the alternator should be replaced.

There is a alternator rebuild kit you can purchase. Its about $30 or $40 dollars. It will include brushes and regulator. The problem with this is if the alternator is burnt and you have to buy a new or rebuilt then you just lost 30 to 40 dollars on a item that cannot be returned since its electronics. Best thing is to have it tested by a parts dealer that might give you some insight in which direction to go.

Yes the voltage regulator is internal in the alternator. The 2 wire plug on the rear....that's the 1 for the regulator and to replace it needs to be removed from vehicle and disassembled to do this and then you also might think about replacing the brushes, diode bridge, rectifier......and YOU think maybe it would be easier to just get a rebuilt alternator ? 1 MORE thing......if your Van has a LIGHT ( ALT ) ....and that light bulb IS burned out...guess what ? Alternator won't charge....because the bulb helps complete the circuit. Hope I helped you.

If you know how to rebuild an alternator you can replace it, but if not go get yourself an alternator and replace that. It will be much easier and less time consuming to change the alt over the regulator. Just remember to charge your battery. Do not use the new alt. to charge the battery. It will overwork the alt and cause it to go defective quicker. Take out the battery and put it on a charger so that you don't overwork your new alt. If you do not have a battery charger, you can bring it to any Advance Auto Parts and they will recharge it for free.
