Looks like it's called dissociative amnesia.

There is a reason we repress memories. Our bodies protect us sometimes from harmful memories or tragic experiences. When something bad happes sometimes our body hides the memory until it thinks we can handle. For example. There have been a few married middle aged men who are now remembering they were molested by their priest or pastor. The abuse happened when they were ten yet they didn't remember it until they were almost fifty. The reason is that now, they are settled in life, happy, have a family, and so their bodys or minds tell them that it's time to remember. Sometimes people never remember. I was in a car accident where my sister died and I don't remember the accident and I don't want to. I think it's okay not to remember that bad.

I know that I have clients that have a problem remembering good times and a lot of times this is from a side effect of their medication, or their mental illness, or just something like age. As a therapist or a counselor we do not demand that someone remember past bad memories. We only work on what's going on now not what we think may or may not have happened.

Thats a coping mechanism, the brain and emotions do that to preserve each other.
It also parallels denial.
