First of all u have to know that indie is the abbreviation of independent.
Independent in music industries mean that artist produce and distribute their album not by big label, such as sony bmg. But they prefer to promote and distribute their albums by themselves or small label.
Indie doesn't mean that it has to be a particular music genre but it can be done for all music genres.

One of the most common and widely recognized definitions of "indie" is the description of not being connected with a major recording label (currently one of the "Big Four" recording companies: Warner, Universal, Sony BMG and EMI).

The main type of music associated with indie is rock music. Most of the rock bands that are popular today started out as an indie band, such as Panic! at the Disco.

Short for independent rock. In terms of music it would be independent of major labels/mainstream stuff.
